Bill
Lewis, Yesterdog restaurant owner and former Mr. Fables employee, apparently owns the Mr. Fables trademark and would be allowed access to
the Mr. Fables secret recipes by Boyles and Faber if he wished to
restart the Mr. Fables restaurant.
A recent question posted on the
Yesterdog Facebook page posed the question of why should Mr. Fables come
back, leading some to believe the restaurant may be making a return.
I loved Mr. Fables! I ate at both the downtown Mr. Fables on Division (I worked at Old Kent Bank) and lived on the NE side of town. I still laugh about the Northland Drive marquee (over Labor Day weekend) saying, "Last place to eat before the bridge!" Too funny. Peg Frank Terkeurst
It was the best and the restaurant on 54th Street and Division was always packed. I don't understand why they closed. I still dream about those burgers, rings and shakes!
I started working at Mr. Fables in Grand Haven when I was 17 - that was 43 years ago in 1971!! I was there for 3 years. During Coast Guard Festival the waiting lines would never end and we turned over tables at a frantic pace for days. We also served "car hop" there. Fun memories!! :)
Mr Fables could be a hit again.. but only if it remains a private company and not selling out again. I worked there for nearly 5 years, starting the day after my 16th b-day, at the Wyoming location. Fun place to work. When the owners sold-out it started to fall apart and was never the same again. I wasn't surprised when I heard they had shut down. Food was great and met a lot of wonderful people while working there.
No doubt about it. A Mr.Fables returning to Grand Rapids would only bring back some of that Old West Side Nostalgia. Anyone who grew up in or around Grand Rapids is Familiar with Olive burvers, onion rings and that nice atmosphere in a Mr. Fables restaurant. It was like dining in a friendly cafeteria style at yet a feel of at home comfort.
Mr. Fables would be a great addition to places to eat. I drool at remembering the burgers and onion rings. They always had good "fresh" coffee. The malts were very good too.
I grew up in Grand Rapids but have spent the last 43 years in Rhode Island. The Mr. Fabulous burger, onion rings, and Chocolate shake (or Coffee) were a constant for my friend (now brother in law) and me. To this day all my burgers at home must have olives.
My Dad Came here from the Netherlands in 1950 and he worked for Mr. Fables for 50yrs and retired and then they closed. He was a real people person. Everybody knew him and Mr. Fables was his life. He started when there was only 1 restauraut and it grew to 14 before the demise. Please remember Ron Danhof he was everybodys friend.
I lived in Grand Rapids for 2 years in the mid 70s . forty years later I am still haunted by the mr. fabulous burger. I Try to explain how awesome they were to people here in ohio but its nothing you can really explain. Its was not just an olive mayo sauce and all the recipes online are not the same. if you live in western michigan be thankful you have access to this regional phenomenon. Thank you Mr.Faber and Mr.Boyles for creating the worlds greatest burger...

ReplyDeleteWhat I remember about Mr. Fables' burgers was how the hamburger patties were so delicious, and "crumbly".
ReplyDeleteLOVE Mr Fables, I was so sad to go home back to Michigan and find out they closed. Burgers were the best and the fried fish too!
